F.Alexander Louttit

Lower Blackhammer

M. Janet Craigie

  had a son

William Louttit     b. 7.10.1852 Rousay
At the school of Rousay on 19 April 1853 (probably the Westside School), the Kirk session met and constituted.  The Moderator was the Rev James Gardener and Messrs Reid and Kirkness, Elders.  James Gardener was married to Harriet Corsie
Barbara Louttit appeared at the session and stated that she had given birth to a child, and the father was William Wood residing at Walliwall near Kirkwall, but he had left the country. The Moderator was asked to write to Kirkwall on the subject and report at the next meeting.  Barbara Louttit was admonished and dismissed for the present. The meeting was closed with prayer.

At the church in Rousay on 30 April 1854 the Kirk session met again.  A letter from a Dr Logie from Kirkwall was read and it stated that W Wood had indeed left the country.  Barbara Louttit was in attendance and was questioned about the father of her child. She again was admonished and dismissed for present.

A third meeting was called on 6 May 1855.  Barbara Louttit craved baptism for her child.  Being interrogated she again solemnly declared that William Wood was the father of the child. Again she was rebuked and seriously admonished before the session for the act of fornication, and informed her that she was absolved and was admitted back to the church privileges.
This must have been a trying time for the girl, with over two years of meetings and rebukes, and public scandal on top of this.  She paid very dearly for her son.
This information was kindly provided by Tommy Gibson, Rousay, a descendant of William Louttit.
