Christina (1863 - 1936) married Charles Bowie in Edinburgh. They emigrated
to Canada and settled in Winnipeg. They had three children and two
grandsons one of whom was my father. They had a tailoring business. The
youngest of the Louttit family was Elizabeth who married Edward Bowie the
younger brother of Charles Bowie. He was a train engineer. They settled in
Fort William, now Thunder Bay, in Ontario. They had 4 children and 3
grandchildren, two of whom still live at Thunder Bay. The
sisters, and their daughters, were great letter writers and kept in close
touch, but all traces of John, William, Scarth, and Henry have been lost.
None of them is thought to have remained in Rousay. |

name of Jean Parker. James went to Australia. He erected a headstone on
his parents’ grave. William married Charlesina Hamilton in Glasgow
in 1878. Alexander is said to have been a partner in a small diamond mine
in South Africa, where he died. Jane Mary (Mary Jane) married a ship’s
captain and went to the South Pacific. She settled in Hawaii and had 3
daughters and one son. She was widowed and remarried in Hawaii. Her 3
daughters married and eventually moved to California, but her only son,
Calle Dixon, remained in Hawaii. |

Extract
from the Orcadian of 23 May 1917 |
|
On
Thursday last, the remains of Pte Harry Reid, of the Seaforth Highlanders,
the son of Mr Alex Reid, gardener, Melsetter, Longhope, was brought to
the island by patrol boat and interred in Westside Churchyard. The bearing
and firing parties were of the ORGA Territorials, and they
accompanied the remains from Kirkwall. There were present also a number of
relations and friends from Longhope. They were met at Westness by a large
number of inhabitants, who followed the cortege to the graveyard. The
service, which was most impressive, was conducted by the Rev Duncan
Maclaren of Evie, who kindly officiated in the absence of the Rev J Deas
Logie, who is now attending the Assembly. The greatest sympathy is felt
for Mr Reid, father of the deceased, which was evidenced by the number of
mourners who accompanied the remains to the churchyard. Mr. Reid's other
son joined the colours in Canada, and is now serving with the Canadians.

This Harry Reid (named
after his uncle Harry who died in WW 1) joined the Canadian RAF and served
as a navigator on Lancaster bombers in WW 2. On 30 July 1944 his
aircraft took part in a raid on northern France. They encountered
severe problems and were limping back to base but were unable to make it.
The crew managed to avoid crashing into housing estates but the aircraft
came down in a playing field in Salford, Manchester. Unfortunately,
it was still carrying its load of 18 x 500 lb bombs. There were no
survivors, two civilians were also killed in the explosion and some 70
others were injured.
|
|
The
body of Harry Reid was returned to Kirkwall and lies in St. Olaf’s Cemetery
next to his mother’s parents.
|
|
Because the crew successfully missed the
housing estates avoiding a major loss of life, there is now a monument in
this Salford park in remembrance of the incident and those who gave their
lives. Details of this crash are highlighted in the Imperial War
Museum-North in Manchester.

Netta and Bert moved to Fogo island, off the
north coast of Newfoundland, around 1916. This turned out to be
fortunate for them, since the Newfoundland Regiment was decimated at
Beaumont Hamel on 1 July of that year. While the rest of Canada
celebrates Canada Day on 1 July, it is Memorial Day in Newfoundland,
commemorating the date of that battle.
|
|
There was nothing new to Netta about living on
an island, but the bitterly cold climate was something else, even though
Fogo is further south than Egilsay. She particularly complained that
she would wake up in the morning and the milk would be frozen in the
pitcher on the table. They soon relocated to Niagara Falls, Ontario.
